How to
360 Flip

The short answer

A 360 flip, or tre flip, is a kickflip combined with a full 360-degree backside shove-it. Set your back foot at the tip of the tail, toes hanging off the toe side, and your front foot in kickflip position, angled further back than usual. The scoop does most of the work; add only a light flick off the heel-side corner, then wait for the spin and the flip to both come around.

  1. 01

    Set up

Back foot at the tip of the tail, toes hanging off the toe side. Front foot in kickflip position, further back and more angled than usual.

  2. 02

    Pop

Pop down with a big scoop back, more scoop than a regular kickflip needs.

  3. 03

    Flick

Add a light flick off the heel-side corner of the nose at the same moment as the scoop.

  4. 04

    Wait

Pull your knees up and wait for the full 360 spin and the flip to both come around.

  5. 05

    Catch

Catch it with both feet once the grip tape and the flip line up, then land over the bolts.

Troubleshooting

Why you're not
landing it.

The flip finishes but the board keeps spinning

Why
Your flick is doing too much work compared to the scoop.
Fix
Lighten the flick and commit more to the scoop, since the scoop drives the 360.

It only spins 180, like a varial kickflip

Why
The scoop isn't big enough to carry it all the way around.
Fix
Scoop bigger and further back than you would for a varial kickflip.

You catch it early and it's still flipping

Why
You're not waiting long enough for both rotations to finish.
Fix
Keep your knees up and wait an extra beat before you commit to the catch.

The board dips low and clips the ground

Why
You're not popping with enough height for two full rotations to complete.
Fix
Pop harder for more height, since a 360 flip needs more air time than a kickflip.

DrillIsolate the big scoop alone as a 360 shove-it first, then add the light kickflip flick once the scoop is consistent.

FAQ

360 Flip
FAQ

Why is it called a tre flip?

It's short for 360 flip, shortened to tre flip by skaters.

How long does it take to learn a 360 flip?

It's a demanding trick, often taking months of consistent practice, and usually comes after a solid kickflip and 360 shove-it.

Should I learn a 360 shove-it before a 360 flip?

Yes, it's a common order, since the scoop that carries the spin is the harder half of the trick.

Why does my board flip but only spin partway?

The scoop is underpowered relative to the flick. Push the scoop harder and keep the flick light.
