How to
Fakie Ollie

The short answer

A fakie ollie is a regular ollie popped while you're rolling backwards in your normal stance. Your feet go exactly where they do for a normal ollie, back foot on the tail and front foot just behind the front bolts. Pop and slide the same way, but stay centered over the board instead of leaning into the direction you're rolling.

Step by step

Land your
first Fakie Ollie.

Each step is a part of the trick Skate AI scores when you film a try.

  1. 01

    Set up

Back foot on the tail, front foot just behind the front bolts, same as a regular ollie. Get rolling tail-first.

  2. 02

    Center

Stay stacked directly over the board instead of leaning back into the roll.

  3. 03

    Pop

Pop straight down off the ball of your back foot, same as your regular ollie.

  4. 04

    Slide

Drag your front foot up toward the nose as the board rises.

  5. 05

    Land

Catch it with both feet over the bolts, knees bent, and keep rolling fakie.

Troubleshooting

Why you're not
landing it.

You pop but fall backwards

Why
You're leaning into the direction you're rolling instead of staying centered.
Fix
Keep your shoulders and hips stacked over the middle of the board before you pop.

The board spins out to one side

Why
Your front foot slide isn't running straight because you can't see the nose as easily rolling fakie.
Fix
Look down at the board, not just ahead, until the straight slide feels automatic.

You can't pop as high as your regular ollie

Why
You're hesitating on the pop because the backwards roll feels unfamiliar.
Fix
Commit to the same hard, fast pop you already use going forward.

You bail before you even pop

Why
You're uncomfortable rolling backwards at speed.
Fix
Practice rolling fakie on its own first, with no pop, until it feels normal.

FAQ

Fakie Ollie
FAQ

Is a fakie ollie harder than a regular ollie?

The pop itself is identical. What's harder is staying balanced and reading the ground while rolling backwards.

How long does a fakie ollie take to learn once I have a regular ollie?

Usually much less time than the first ollie, often just a few sessions, since the foot placement and pop don't change.

What's the difference between a fakie ollie and a switch ollie?

A fakie ollie keeps your normal stance and regular foot placement, just rolling backwards. A switch ollie keeps you rolling forward but swaps which foot is front and back.

Why do I lean back and stall out?

Rolling backwards makes it easy to lean into the roll instead of staying stacked over the board. Keep your weight centered, not shifted toward the tail.
